Send A Message To Your Presidential Candidate
Step 1: Review or edit our suggested message
I'd like to draw your attention to an issue that I think should be covered in this presidential election: making U.S. currency identifiable by feel. The Treasury Department is currently resisting all efforts to improve our currency by adding tactile features like size variation or raised markings, as most other countries already have on their currencies. Presidential candidates need to show leadership by making clear that this business-as-usual approach by the Treasury Department isn't acceptable and that the time has come to modernize our currency. Such a change would have the following benefits: * Improved resistance to counterfeiting by including features that are difficult to duplicate using digital imaging technology * Rapid identification of money, even in the dark, for convenience and accuracy * Enhanced security through enabling money to be handled discreetly inside a pocket or wallet * Independent identification of bills by the estimated ten million blind and visually impaired Americans without the need to rely on sighted people or expensive and unreliable technology * Creation of increased employment opportunities for blind and visually impaired young people in jobs that involve handling money * Ability of visitors to our country to handle money as easily as they do at home by making the denominations more distinctive, as they are in most other currencies in the world, such as the euro I urge you to discuss this issue on the campaign trail and to use your power as President to get the Treasury Department to modernize our currency if you are elected. The United States needs to catch up to the rest of the world in making currency identifiable and easily usable by all people, regardless of their level of vision and regardless of the lighting conditions. This is a change that makes common sense and is therefore achievable. A word from the President to the Treasury is all that is needed to make it happen. I hope you will add this issue to your campaign platform.
